MIkes Thoughts

Tuesday writing

This is one of the things which will move slowly along the same path as my day. It’s almost 5am so I have those thoughts. There’s a slim distance between blog and journal for me most times. Things travel between. Morning thoughts laying in bed still an exercise in journaling but then I think of wanting to just write here. There’s no purpose to it. Not today. It’s just a bookmark of a Tuesday. The morning journaling has no set rules. No time. No count of words. No bullets or lists of things to do. I don’t have lists. Or bullets. I actually despise both. Probably due to two decades of doing them. Life should be less than lists of things done and missed. Or more. Take your choice. It is really about doing and having less. My morning whimpering is about small things. Sometimes feeling big to me. So in with it.

5am means coffee

I make some coffee at home mornings. It’s the bridge between staying in bed and wanting to do the next thing closer to a morning walk and then coffee out. These mornings always feel impatient to go. Perhaps because family visits. They all gather in the kitchen or overflow to the front yard for talk time. There’s really nothing I can think of at 5am I would like to communicate. So I wait. Write. See you for some coffee down some street. My entree to a walk that will lead me to dirt roads and fences and cows. Today a perennial favorite. It’s a nice walk here and the home to walking to coffee is nice.

Lalatte coffee

Sitting at LaLatte coffee means a soft couch. As much time as I want. The walk after becomes whatever too. Music goes and Siem Reap nods in my direction. The holidays went by. The puppies are demanding like good puppies should be. They want to love and play with everyone. Some of our family don’t like that much. These little dudes are family too.

This morning at coffee. And here I sit.

coffee morning

Really been enjoying the writing lately on the blog. Maybe it’s because I made the thing. Then I added some stuff. Figured out other things. For some time I fiddled with the idea of going to Pika. I love writing there. It’s this ease of things. Nothing is ever set in stone besides all the things that are set in stone. Even they are victims of natures forces. So we will see. Right now writing this way seems the thing I just love doing. Having some other place with its needs seems like a thing I don’t want.

Instead today I will stay here and slowly work on the coffee. Find my pace. Lose my place. Then I’ll just write more after whatever happens gets done happening. See you then.

Home again and night beckons

A slow day was had today. My wife made some wonderful spicy chicken bits with French fries and fresh veggies. I guess I don’t really eat too many Cambodian dishes. She’s a good cook of whatever and I never really know what it is she will make. When she does cook local food it is often different kinds of soup. Soup here is a wonderful and varied joy. She can also make the usual dishes here. I’m grateful for not just one kind of food. I would not like just local food all the time. My wife enjoys other foods too. It was fun in Kampot taking her for american bbq and letting her taste the pulled pork with spicy bbq sauce. Good times!

Now its an afternoon of listening to history documentaries. I’m trying to swear off the local expat YouTube vlogs. I listen to a few of them and its sometimes rather disturbing and I always come away thinking that its not the life I would want to live here. I’m not a very well assimilated barang. I don’t think anyone is. We all live in different spaces but we never really make it into some other culture. I just take the bits of Khmer culture I like. Some things I don’t like so I let them go. My wife and family just accept things now.

The day slowly will become the evening and it’s another day here that dwindles away. The puppies bark now as strangers come by. Getting territorial and protective. Those two are lovable and will forever run to my wife or I. Maybe they know that she is the one making their food. I just play with them, hold them, sit with them and watch them. Sometimes with delight. Other times with disbelief at their antics.

I’ll be putting the finishing touches on this wonderful work tonight. I don’t know what else I will add. It will just be another day spent. I only eat once a day now so dinner is not a thing for me. My wife ensures she makes big meals for me. This has meant the difference for me for years. It never was some goal to lose weight or some doctor that told me I must. It just happened. Now I know I will never look like I did. This is just the new me. How I live, things I do, food I love. Whether its added a year or a day to my life I dunno. What I do know is the quality of life has been very good. I’ll take that.

See you tonight. It may rain then. The rainy season needs a closing act. We will see if it gets another chance at it tonight.

tonight’s final things or so

This was a fun little exercise in writing for the day. I may do this again when I go downtown for a walk, food , whatever. I’ve done this in the past starting a post the evening before then it kinda waited until my morning out for coffee and a walk. Today I just turned it around to something I wanted to do.

Spent the day watching history and other documentaries. Now its likely time to let this go. Its just about evening. The day starts fading to an evening with renegade raindrops still going. Maybe like this tonight as well. Tomorrow is a coffee day. Its the walk which takes me away. Down some road I’ve done many times yet I look forward to the pulse of it.

See you then.
